Software
An operating system is the software component of a computer system that is responsible for the management and coordination of activities and sharing the resources of the computer.
The operating system almost all home computers are sold with is Microsoft Windows.
Linux is an an alternative. It is open source, that is you can have its source code, change parts of it or write new ones providing you share any changes you make with everyone else. Operating systems like Windows are closed source, which means you are tied to Microsoft's own developers and agenda. If Linux doesn't do what you want it to, change it and make it available to others. If Windows doesn't do what you want it to, tough.
Our computers run Puppy Linux, which has been specially developed to take advantage of our computer's energy efficient architecture. Windows does not have that kind of flexibility, which is the reason we don't sell it.
It's got numerous other advantages, too. Some of these are:
- Speed. If you can make a cup of tea before your computer is ready to do any useful work, you have a problem. Our computers start up within 90 seconds.
- Stability. Linux was originally developed for use on servers, where reliability is of the utmost importance. The huge developer base and lack of unnecessary bloat makes for a much more reliable system.
- Great software. Getting online is easy with Skipstone, the newest and most secure web browser available. Web based applications like Google Docs are easy to use and offer reliability and features far beyond those offered by conventional office software. Click data storage for more information.
And the best thing is, everything is incredibly easy to use. We will provide the machine, tailored to you and ready to go straight from the box. You'll be going in minutes.
